Description

This technically simple experiment introduces advanced concepts of PCR and DNA fingerprinting as it simulates the use of DNA in forensic investigations. The user casts agarose gels, loads predigested DNA, and performs electrophoresis. The resulting banding patterns of the evidence and victim DNA in the gel are then compared to the DNA fingerprints of the 2 suspects. Kit includes enough materials for 2 demonstrations, plus free 1-year access to digital resources.

Beginning—Easy to perform, requires little or no prior knowledge.

  • Introduces advanced concepts of PCR and DNA fingerprinting
  • Gels can be run in 45 minutes with five 9-V batteries or overnight with 1 battery
  • Introduces forensic techniques

This technically simple experiment simulates the use of DNA in forensic investigations. Prealiquoted reagents and Carolina's Exploring Electrophoresis apparatus make the kit ready to use out of the box without the need for additional biotechnology equipment or micropipettes.

The user (teacher or students) casts agarose gels, loads predigested DNA, and performs electrophoresis. DNA banding patterns in the gel are then used to compare the DNA fingerprints of 2 suspects with evidence and victim DNA. Demonstration Kit includes enough materials for 2 demonstrations, plus free 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS.
