Introduce your students to the phenomenon of fluorescence and its applications in biotechnology with this hands-on lab. During the lab, students explore the properties of fluorescein, a commonly used indicator in biotechnology applications. This inquiry-based approach helps students grow comfortable using indicator molecules to answer experimental questions. It also gives them the opportunity to develop foundational lab skills such as micropipetting and estimating the concentration of a solute through a dilution series. This lab can be completed in one or two 45-minute periods, depending on approach. Kit contains enough reagents for 8 lab groups (32 students). Note: Store in a cool place, protected from light. Shelf life is 24 months when stored at 4° C.
