Description
Spark excitement and enhance electrostatics instruction with this Van de Graaff generator accessories kit. Demonstrate charge repulsion, show the charge-discharge cycle, create visible sparks, make hair stand on end, and even light a fluorescent bulb. Needed but not supplied are an electric Van de Graaff generator (200 kV and up), heavy work gloves, ruler, meterstick (no metal ends), step stool, and string. Kit materials may be used indefinitely. Includes instructions.
The Van de Graaff generator in the Web site image is for illustrative purposes; this item is not included in the kit. We recommend using a tabletop generator, item #756209.
Demonstrations that may be performed using this kit include:
- You Light Up My Life—In addition to creating brilliant sparks, a fluorescent bulb partially illuminates as sparks make contact.
- Flying Peanuts—Packing peanuts repel one another and fly out of a cup.
- Up, Up, and Away—Balloons connected by a string acquire the same charge from the dome and repel each other.
- Pie Pan UFOs—Stacked aluminum pie pans repel each other and fly off one at a time.
- Hair-Raising Experience—Hairs of faux fur acquire like charges that repel each other, causing them to stick up.
