Students investigate the relationship among a recessive gene (Adh), its enzyme product (alcohol dehydrogenase, ADH), and the resulting phenotype. ADH-negative mutants cannot break down the ethanol they consume, leading to intoxication and, ultimately, death from alcohol poisoning. Students make observations over a 24-hr period, requiring them to take flies home overnight. For 8 groups of up to 4 students each; requires 2-3 class periods to complete.
