Description

Fruit flies (Drosophila) offer a wealth of hands-on options for teaching genetics. Students can easily study the sex-linked, recessive, and dominant mutations. This vial contains eyeless (ey2) chromosome 4 mutant Drosophila, which demonstrate an autosomal recessive mutation that causes reduced-size eyes (3/4 to 1/2 the size of wild type Drosophila). It is an easy-to-score strain that is excellent for beginning genetics.

Product Details
Eyeless (ey2) chromosome 4 mutant Drosophila (fruit flies) demonstrate an autosomal recessive mutation that causes reduced-size eyes (3/4 to 1/2 the size of wild type Drosophila).

These flies are recommended for investigating autosomal inheritance and are excellent for beginning Drosophila studies because of how easy they are to score. For a complete guide on maintaining and studying Drosophila, including how to culture, anesthetize, and score them, and the genetic notations, consider our Carolina® Drosophila Manual (item #452620).

Note: It takes up to 2 weeks from the date of the vial for adults to develop. When culture arrives, remove cap but leave plug in place. Keep culture out of sunlight and maintain at 68–77° F (20–25° C). Some mutations in Drosophila have high fitness costs and/or variable expression within a population. Additional stock purification steps may be required when working with this stock.
