Fruit flies (Drosophila) offer a wealth of hands-on options for teaching genetics. Students can easily study autosomal inheritance. This vial contains vestigial brown (vg1bw1) chromosome 2 mutant Drosophila, which demonstrate 2 autosomal recessive mutations. The vestigial mutation causes reduced wings and halteres. The brown mutation causes pale red-brown eyes that darken with age.

The vestigial brown (vg1bw1) chromosome 2 mutant Drosophila (fruit flies) demonstrate 2 autosomal recessive mutations. The vestigial mutation causes reduced wings and halteres. The brown mutation causes pale red-brown eyes that darken with age.
These flies are recommended for investigating autosomal inheritance and are excellent for beginning Drosophila studies because of how easy they are to score. For a complete guide on maintaining and studying Drosophila, including how to culture, anesthetize, and score them, and the genetic notations, consider our Carolina® Drosophila Manual (item #452620).
Note: It takes up to 2 weeks from the date of the vial for adults to develop. When culture arrives, remove cap but leave plug in place. Keep culture out of sunlight and maintain at 6877° F (2025° C).
