Grade 9–College. Here's an opportunity for your students to become crime scene technicians as they learn about explosive residue testing. Students perform chemical tests for the presence of explosive residue. They also observe a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image for characteristic patterns of gunshot residue (GSR). Kit is fully correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards* (NGSS) and includes free 1-year access to a digital teacher's manual and student guide download. Activity is designed for a class of 32 students working in pairs.
Students will:
- Chemically test a sample for the presence of nitrates
- Observe the collection of a sample for SEM testing
- Analyze an SEM micrograph of GSR for characteristic patterns
- Document the evidence collection process
