Grades 6–12. With over 100,000 known species, phylum Mollusca is the second most diverse phylum of animals. First examined are the basic characteristics of the phylum—a soft body, muscular foot, mantle cavity with gill, and hard calcified shell. The 4 most familiar classes of molluscs (chitons, gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods) are studied in depth, viewing structure, life history, adaptations, and ecological interactions. Phylum Mollusca has an ancient heritage, as shown by 510-million-year-old fossils from the Burgess Shales in Western Canada, unfolding into the modern view of molluscan evolutionary relationships. This program is 15 minutes long and includes 6 chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Phylum Origins and Characteristics
  • Chapter 2: Class Polyplacophora
  • Chapter 3: Class Gastropoda
  • Chapter 4: Class Pelecypoda
  • Chapter 5: Class Cephalopoda
  • Chapter 6: Summary

It also includes an additional reference document for download. This schoolwide subscription gives all teachers and students affiliated with the school access to the program for 1 year.
