Description

Product Highlights

  • Reintroduction to metal properties and connecting the physical behavior of steel to what is happening on a molecular level.
  • Digital investigation to be completed with common household items provided by the teacher and/or student.
  • Carolina Kits 3D®—Labs that use phenomena to support NGSS and 3-dimensional instruction.

By purchasing this product, you receive a digital access code (delivered via e-mail) for the teacher's manual, student guide, and other instructional materials accessed on Carolina's eLearning platform, CarolinaScienceOnline.com. No physical materials are included. Review the "What's Included" tab to see the items and supplies needed to perform the hands-on activities; quantities reflect a single-classroom use. These items are to be provided by the teacher and/or student.

Forging techniques for strengthening Japanese swords serve as the investigative phenomenon. Students model steel heat-treating techniques with paper clips, use their data to make sense of the phenomenon, and discover the answer to the driving question, "How does heat-treating steel change its structure and function? "

Time Requirement
Total, 155 minutes minimum. Teacher prep, 45 minutes. Pre-lab, 20 minutes. Investigation, 60 minutes. Assessment, 30 minutes. Investigation 2 is a research-based poster presentation. As such, the amount of time necessary for its completion is highly dependent on individual classes. Allow at least 1–2 class periods for presentations.

Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS. Digital resources may include a teacher manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, phenomenon videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.
