Forging techniques for strengthening Japanese swords serve as the investigative phenomenon. Students model steel heat-treating techniques with paper clips, use their data to make sense of the phenomenon, and discover the answer to the driving question, "How does heat-treating steel change its structure and function?"

Time Requirement
Total, 155 minutes minimum. Teacher prep, 45 minutes. Pre-lab, 20 minutes. Investigation, 60 minutes. Assessment, 30 minutes. Investigation 2 is a research-based poster presentation. As such, the amount of time necessary for its completion is highly dependent on individual classes. Allow at least 1–2 class periods for presentations.
