Microscope slide showing a section of mammalian spongy bone, also called cancellous bone or trabecular bone. Stained with hematoxylin and eosin to show general characteristics.
Have students explore the structure of spongy bone, also called cancellous or trabecular bone, with this prepared microscope slide. The lamellar matrix of the trabeculae along with the osteocytes within the matrix can be easily identified. The bone marrow surrounding the trabeculae will vary in appearance based on the type of marrow and bone the section is taken from. Red marrow will contain blood cells in reticular tissue, while yellow marrow will consist of mostly adipocytes.
