Students explore the chemistry of carbon using a variety of modeling methods. Based on the models created, they learn about molecular shape, stereochemistry, isomerism, and different classes of organic compounds. A series of exercises help students relate the structure of organic molecules to their functional applications. Students then design and conduct their own experiment to evaluate the efficiency of synthetic and natural hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers in cleaning up an oil spill.
