Everything your class needs to witness sea urchins develop is available in this 1 convenient kit. You'll get Eucidaris tribuloides or Lytechinus variegatus (our choice). Plus you receive all the materials and instructions necessary for achieving viable gametes—and for following development from early cleavage through pluteus. Urchins are ripe at the time of arrival; we recommend that they be used the day of arrival or immediately the next day to avoid reabsorption of the gametes. Not sexed, but male-to-female ratio is usually about 1:1.

Note: Kit includes a prepaid coupon to request live materials later at your convenience. Contact us or return the coupon at least 2 weeks in advance of requested delivery date of live materials. Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hit or miss- a risky lab to plan for When this works, it is awesome! Watching fertilization and embryogenesis in real time is amazing. But, it doesn't always work. We have ordered 4 times in the past year, and only twice did everything go as planned. Last spring we had good luck with sea urchin health and spawning. Some urchins arrived very ill and quickly died, but enough survived to collect gametes the day or arrival and the following day. Embryos grew as expected, and the students had a great experience. This year, both orders ended in failure. In late March, we received healthy urchins, collected gametes the day of, and were able to get fertilization and early embryonic stages. The day after arrival, all animals were dead (we kept them in the same conditions as last year). The gametes we stored overnight were no longer viable (again, kept them the same way as the prior year). Today (mid April), we received healthy urchins, but only 2 individuals produced gametes, and unfortunately they were both male. This means I have a 4 hour lab period tomorrow, for which students have prepared, and I have no lab to conduct. So, my advice is to plan for the unexpected if you order this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, flexible shipping and quality animals. I ordered one embryology kit and specified that it be shipped Monday. About four days before shipment, I realized that it would be better if they were to arrive Wednesday (shipped Tuesday). I called Carolina and they easily made this change. The urchins arrived Wednesday around 1pm, and all of the urchins were alive and seemingly unstressed (they weren't losing spines, and only a few apparently reabsorbed their gametes). Approx. 12 arrived with the kit. Of the 12, 10 or so provided gametes. They were roughly equally distributed between males and females. The fertilization worked beautifully, and development proceeded for at least 48 hours (at this point they have successfully reached the pluteus stage, and are still alive and swimming). I can't recommend this kit more enthusiastically. This exercise was for a senior-level college developmental biology course. My students were snapping pictures with their phones through the microscope eyepiece - which is the highest praise you can receive from a 22 year old.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I used this kit to teach Non-major biology students on embryonic development. The sea urchins were not mature enough to produce sperms or eggs. Out of the 16 sea urchins only two produced some eggs. There were no males so the students were not able to complete the experiment. This kit may be best used during late spring or fall semester.I'm glad Carolina Biological credited the purchase.
