Students extract salicylic acid from willow tree bark and synthesize acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) from the extract. Using a simple qualitative test, they check for the presence of salicylic acid in their aspirin and commercial aspirin from home. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs.
