Grades 6–12. Using this kit, students investigate pendulums and variables related to period, while also studying conservation of energy and conservation of momentum. The system can hold 3 pendulums, making it easy to see the effect of the same mass on a pendulum at 2 different lengths.
Having spheres of identical and different masses enables students to investigate conservation of momentum effectively. They can observe effects due to air resistance using same-diameter spheres of different materials. Finally, students can measure acceleration due to gravity at their location and compare results with tabular data.
The spheres are designed with 2 holes 180° apart, a small hole for the string and a larger countersunk hole for the knot, enabling the sphere to swing through its center of mass for less wobble during periodic motion.
