Grades 6–12. Students build a wave machine and transmit messages using Morse code as they learn about wave properties and how information is encoded and decoded in a wave. Students initially build wave machines with clay, skewers, and duct tape to transmit Morse code signals. Students also measure wave speed and apply engineering processes in refining and optimizing their design for reliability and efficiency. Materials support 10 design teams.

Grades 6–12. Students build a wave machine and transmit Morse code as they learn about wave properties and encoding and decoding information in a wave, known as signal modulation/demodulation. Students initially build wave machines with clay, skewers, and duct tape to transmit messages using Morse code. Students then measure the wave speed, employing several methods, and apply engineering processes in refining and optimizing their design for reliability and efficiency, dismantling and rebuilding the machine. They learn about wave properties including wavelength, frequency, modulation/demodulation, harmonics, standing waves, and Morse code—all in one kit!

Appendices in the teacher's manual and the online digital resources provide:

  • A Morse code table
  • An additional standing wave experiment
  • Tips for refining the experiments
  • The kit comes with a free 1-year subscription to digital resources, including:

    • An experiment using gummy bears in a microwave to learn about standing waves
    • Calculating the speed of light and microwave wavelength
