In this introduction to the mechanics of vision and its application to 3-D art, students explore the connection between art and science. They investigate the structure and function of human visual perception, the transmission of messages to the brain via sensory receptors, and the basic principles of geometric optics and ray diagrams. With knowledge gained, students develop their own 3-D illusions.

Students investigate the structure and function of human visual perception, the transmission of messages to the brain via sensory receptors, and the basic principles of geometric optics and ray diagrams. Teams then work through a series of activities to develop their own 3-D illusions. Addresses Next Generation Science Standards*: MS-LS1-8. Kit is designed for a class of 30 students working in pairs and includes a teacher’s manual that provides a design challenge scoring rubric and multiple extension activities. Kit also includes 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS.
