The investigator fills 3 dialysis tubes with dilute chemical solutions and arranges them side by side in a clear plastic chamber. Within minutes, permeating chemicals diffuse from one tube into any adjacent tube. Chemicals brought together by diffusion may produce a brightly colored precipitate, or diffusion may be verified by other specific tests described in the instructions.
