This lab was developed to teach your students about a serious problem facing society, bacterial antibiotic resistance, while introducing them to basic enzymology assays. Students collect the supernatant from ampicillin-resistant bacterial cultures and perform a simple colorimetric assay to detect the activity of β-lactamase, the enzyme conferring ampicillin resistance.

This lab was developed in cooperation with the authors of DNA Science: A First Course, 2nd Edition (item #212209) to teach your students about a serious problem facing society, bacterial antibiotic resistance, while introducing them to basic enzymology assays.
