Microscope slide showing a whole mount of the common colonial green algae, Volvox. The slide shows daughter colonies, the asexual reproductive stage of Volvox.
Students explore the characteristic colonies of the popular green algae, Volvox, using this whole mount. Between 500 and 50,000 flagellated algal cells aggregate in a gelatinous extracellular matrix to form these spherical colonies. Within the Volvox colonies, students can easily see daughter colonies that form during asexual reproduction.
