Your class might have trouble believing it, but these ferocious-looking creatures are quite shy and can even be handled. These insects, originally from the Isle of Madagascar, hiss loudly when disturbed by forcefully expelling air through their spiracles. Their large carapaces have false eyespot protrusions that give the roaches their fierce appearance. Once they are used to being handled, they no longer hiss. If you leave them alone for a few weeks, they begin to hiss again. Adult.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, so good I bought these to give company to the lone cockroach I had in my tank. So far, they seem to be thriving, though I think one of them, or the lone resident, died soon after (about 2 weeks later).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hissers, bad mites. I've gotten a total of five hissers over the past year. The last three (separately ordered and shipped by weeks) have all had issues with mites. I have my two males in one habitat and two females in a different habitat (my fifth died after not even a year and when was lethargic, wobbly, and not himself, emails suggested old age, but he was still growing and had grown massively since I'd gotten him). I've cleaned them and dumped their habitats only to find I can still see mites on them. I will be "flouring" them again today and hopefully this will resolve the issue. I understand mites can occur on them and what to do if they do, but it would be nice if they weren't shipped with them. Besides that, I love my hissers.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Missing Legs The specimen that I ordered (Madagascar Hissing Cockroach) was missing the tibias of two of it's legs. It can still move about but it's a bummer that we received a classroom pet that faces challenges in life when it comes to movement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality of specimen I ordered three hissing cockroaches to add as company to my sons' existing pet cockroach. They arrived on time, in very humane packaging (ice pack to regulate temp, food, cover to hide, etc.). And they were HUGE... two to three time the size of the one we've had for almost a year! The antennae were intact, they were active, and they had excellent coloring. Customer service was very polite when I called to confirm the delivery date, and I was kept updated ever step of the way. This was my first order and I was very impressed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice roaches They arrived alive; not surprising because they are difficult to kill. As long as you keep them fed (I use dog food) and watered, they will thrive and produce generation after generation of hissing cockroaches (make sure your container has relatively small screening so the newborns don't escape). They do tend to hide during the day, so don't expect to observe much cockroach behavior, at least not with the lights on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hissing Cockroaches make great pets! I have kept and bred this species (Gromphadorhina portentosa) of cockroach, they make great pets! First, with proper care can live up to 5 years! They produce a hissing sound through holes on their abdomen. They are gentle and clean animals and do not bite, they are NOT a pest species, if they escape in your house they will die from lack of moisture. If breeding them, rarely you might come across a pure black individual, this is a recessive trait and really are stunning looking! These roaches can climb glass and plastic cages, make sure to keep the cover on! Care: Hissing cockroaches eat: apples, bananas, oranges, mango, romaine lettuce, fresh spinach leaves, dog and cat kibble, white bread, various baby food flavors like (banana,beef,apple,mango,orange/banana). In the wild they eat decomposing leaves and bark too, you can feed decaying Oak leaves (brown) and oak/birch tree bark that is rotting, they need this with the foods listed above. They also need a gentle misting of water daily to drink and it helps with humidity that aids in proper skin shedding. They eat when its dark. Housing: I use a covered, 20 gallon glass tank. Repti bark wood chips as substrate, with wood branches/logs as hiding/climbing decor bought from pet store in reptile section. Females give live birth to babies, males will fight for territory so if your keeping more than one male, have a big setup with space! If given the choice, if you dont want them breeding, only buy males. Adult females will be pregnant, and are pregnant for life, 5 years is a lot of baby roaches!
