In this Science Buddies science project, you'll determine if sediment from parking lots contain compounds that are harmful for aquatic organisms. You can customize this kit to include the Daphnia magna culture kit, fine mesh net, pipets, and other supplies needed to complete this experiment.

One way to test for the presence of toxic compounds in a water sample is a bioassay. In a bioassay, a living organism serves as a detector for toxins—the same way canaries were used in coal mines to detect invisible toxic gases. In this project, water fleas (Daphnia magna), a freshwater crustacean, are used in a bioassay to monitor water quality. Many variations of this experiment are possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Project This was a great project for my daughter’s science fair project. We both learned so much and got a great grade. I would recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very healthy culture! Well over a month ago, my daughter and I purchased a daphnia kit and two separate containers of daphnia for her science fair project. She was studying water toxicity on daphnia and because we have a microscope, it was perfect! Not only did her project work successfully, but we were able to have a "for fun tank" that was just purely for fun under the microscope. It is now almost two months later and we still have daphnia left. We have since ordered other kits from Carolina since we are very happy with the quality that we received. It turned into a fun family event.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good water. I use it to keep my daphnia and algae growing and for replenishing my pond water aquarium. The change in containers is not as welcome. The older gallon containers were easier to carry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good The product is good. When I got culture of Daphnia 75% were alive. Easy to cultivate in lab.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Daphnia magna worked great, but they're hard to keep alive Like the directions said, it was very difficult to keep this species of daphnia alive for very long. I had trouble keeping them alive for just a few days. The first shipment arrived with about an 80% mortality rate (apparently the plane had been held up for hours on the runway), but Carolina quickly replaced them and I had them here the next week. When I do this lab in the future, I will keep all of the daphnia in the containers which they are shipped in and do the lab within two days of the arrival date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Arrived Alive and Swimming! We received approximately 50 Daphnia in 2 different jars. They arrived in the middle of winter in freezing temperatures but Carolina Biological used a heating pack. We followed the directions that came with culture and we have a thriving community of Daphnia 3 weeks later with babies! They are very low maintenance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fascinating organism for experiments. The visible body of the Daphnia magna allows students to view changes caused by environmental variables. For the ethanol experiment I recommend 3% instead of 1%.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product was better than I expected, especially for its price. It was well made and will last a long time.
