Physarum polycephalum is a plasmodial slime mold. The plasmodium is the active feeding stage of the organism. If the plasmodium dries during feeding, it forms a crusted, resting stage called the sclerotium, which we ship in a small box. The sclerotium remains dormant until favorable conditions return, then the plasmodium emerges and proceeds to feed.

Optimal medium: 2% Agar with Old Fashioned Quaker® Oats. Optimal growth temperature: 25° C. Culture contains enough material for a class of 30 students.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to grow Followed the directions to the letter and grew the first two sclerotia without a problem. currently culturing more form the initial two, still have 3 sclerotiums as backups. Really easy to grow. From the two sclerotia, one grew exceptionally well, the other started slow, but is doing well after 5days, smaller and slower culture but still viable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not grow correctly After this product arrived late! I immediately got to work culturing the sclerotium. I followed the directions exactly yet after 3 days they still have not grown. I was using this as a science project. Not a good product

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Improperly dried plamodium not a viable sclerotium I have been growing Physarum for 30 years. What I was sent was not a viable sclerotia. Trails of dried plamodium showing feathering on filter paper is not a proper sclerotia, and will not regrow! A true sclerotia has a thick solid look as the plasmodium has time to cluster and slowly dry out. Shameful misrepresentation.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Samples did not follow the maze We struggled to get viable samples. The samples did not take to the maze except for one. We followed directions to a T.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product did not meet expectations Even though I followed the directions exactly, none of my sclerotium papers managed to enter the plasmodial stage. As the directions instructed, I placed the sclerotium papers face down onto a barely damp filter paper inside of a container and placed them in a dark closet. The instructions that were included with the product stated that the samples would re-enter its active stage in 8-16 hours; however even after at least a week of care and observation, none of the samples entered the plasmodial state. I had very high hopes for this product and for Carolina Biological as my teacher had recommended this company for great service. But I'm very sad to say that I was let down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All pieces grew excellent product. nice big pieces, can be cut up to make more. All grew nicely, comes with oats for food. This is a very easy organism to use in the classroom, especially for student led investigations. You can even make your slime mold go dormant (create a sclerotia) to cut up and use another time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great features a good way of starting a slime mould culture. Since the sclerotium is not very perishable it is very convenient if you want to store it for long periods.
