Grades 6-10. The focus of Experimenting with Mixtures, Compounds, and Elements is to build an understanding of the physical and chemical properties that distinguish these 3 types of matter. In this unit, students investigate how such properties can be used to separate mixtures or how additional energy (in the form of heat or electricity) is needed to separate compounds. They examine elements and discover that elements can combine to form compounds but cannot be further separated into different components.
