Ammonia is an important chemical used in numerous industrial and household applications. Although ammonia is produced by natural processes, natural sources are not sufficient to meet industrial demand. Students will be conducting 3 (or 4) investigations in which they use mathematics and computational thinking to identify patterns to answer the driving question, “For a given chemical reaction, if we know the quantity of reactants, how can we predict the maximum possible yield of products and then later determine the efficiency of the reaction?”

Time Requirement
Total, 240 minutes. Teacher prep, 60 minutes. Pre-lab as homework, 20 minutes. Performing 3 investigations, 160 minutes.

Students should be familiar with Avogadro’s number and be able to write and balance chemical equations; calculate molecular masses; and calculate moles in a compound when given mass, volume, or molecules.
