Description

Product Details

  • Investigate 45 different chemical reactions in this guided-inquiry microscale chemistry experiment.
  • High school chemistry activity with enough materials for 10 lab groups (1 class).
  • Carolina Kits 3D®—Labs that use phenomena to support NGSS and 3-dimensional instruction.

Some chemical reactions produce no visible change, whereas others produce impressive changes in appearance that clearly indicate to an observer that a chemical change has taken place. With enough knowledge of the characteristics of compounds and the elements from which they form, one can make predictions as to the properties of the products of different reactions. Students will analyze data from 73 double-replacement reactions, allowing them to develop an answer to the question, “How can scientists predict the properties of the products of a chemical reaction or design a chemical reaction to produce products with specific properties?”

Time Requirement
Total, 150 minutes. Teacher prep, 15 minutes. Pre-lab, 30 minutes. Investigation, 90 minutes. Assessment, 15 minutes.

Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS. Digital resources may include a teacher’s manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, phenomenon videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.

Learning Objectives

  • Predict the identity of the products of a chemical reaction given the reactants.
  • Write the chemical formula of a substance given the name of the substance.
  • Use evidence from observations to identify the reactants and products in chemical reactions.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should be able to differentiate between chemical and physical changes; understand chemical reactions, including the law of conservation of mass; and balance equations. Students should have familiarity with modern models of the structure of the atom, concepts involving electron distribution/configuration, and trends in the periodic table.
