Grade 3 and up. This is a fun introduction to the world of insect pheromones. Termites use chemicals to mark their trails, but can they be fooled? Using worker termites and various ink pens, students test the reaction of termites to chemicals that mimic those of their natural pheromones. By placing the termites near the prepared trail lines, students observe scent preferences, the insects' agility in maneuvering sharp angles, and their ability to pick up the scent of a lost trail. Kit contains enough materials for up to 30 students working in pairs (including about 100 termites), teacher's manual with reproducible student guide, and digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction. Note: Due to termites' natural life cycle, they are often fragile in early fall and may not ship well.
