Exploring different characteristics of soil provides insight into how productive it might be for farming purposes. Students conduct experiments on different types of soil to observe and measure properties such as water-holding capacity, ion-exchange capacity, macronutrient content, and particle-size distribution to determine which types soil are the most productive for growing plants. Students then test their hypothesis by planting alfalfa to track success.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extensive investigations into soil characteristics This is a great kit, but it will take several class periods to complete. If you are looking to spend only 45 minutes on soils, this kit is not for you. The student Background is an excellent summary of soil characteristics. The instructors guide is complete and clear. The only caveat I would make is that one soil test kit for NPK and pH will not meet the needs of a large class. Either only a few teams should do this part or you will need more test kits. There are other kits which in my opinion work better that the RapidTest kit included. The ion exchange capacity section was the best part of the kit, in my opinion.
